Given the anticipation surrounding the broadcast of the Mexico vs. England match, the government of Nuevo León will focus its security measures for the screening on venues other than the “Fan Fest Monterrey” taking place at Parque Fundidora.
“Regarding the World Cup, we have made decisions—some were announced yesterday, and today I will reiterate and expand upon them,” said State Governor Samuel García.
He noted that the Security Council proposed setting up additional public squares and screens for the event.
He advised the public to watch the match at home, but noted that for those wishing to go out, additional venues would be opened to prevent overcrowding.
“We are going to offer people other spaces—equally nice ones—if they want to watch the game in public,” he said.
He announced that, in addition to Fundidora, Parque España, and Regio Fest, plans are underway to open more spaces near the Macroplaza in the city of Monterrey.
“The ‘Plancha de los Héroes’ [main plaza area] holds 50,000 people… We are going to set it up with screens, services—everything identical,” he stated.
The designated spaces would include LAB Nuevo León (capacity: 6,000); the bridge and the Explanada de Historia (History Esplanade), with a combined capacity of 20,000; and the Explanada del Teatro de la Ciudad (City Theater Esplanade), with a capacity of another 20,000.
In San Nicolás, spaces will be set up at Parque Niños Héroes—specifically at the Bicentenario stadium and the AFAIM stadium (now known as MFL)—with a capacity for 10,000 people.
Another available location is Parque del Agua, where screens will be installed in the parking lot and at the “Pueblito” area of Parque La Pastora.
“We want the city to be zoned, even by territory. We want to have excellent spaces available so that not everyone feels compelled to go to the city center on Sunday,” he explained.
Regarding the various municipalities, responses have already been received from the mayors of Guadalupe, San Pedro, Apodaca, Santiago, Pesquería, and El Carmen, all of whom will make various spaces available for the event. “We are making great progress, and things could go very well this Sunday too, provided people help us avoid overcrowding at Fundidora,” he stated.
He specified that security would be handled by Fuerza Civil, the National Guard, and municipal police forces.
The decision to set up additional areas with screens follows three incidents at Fundidora Park where crowds forced their way in. Last Tuesday, injuries were reported, and fans were also tear-gassed by Fuerza Civil officers.
