Tamaulipas sets up command post and readies 324 shelters.
To strengthen response capabilities for the 2026 rainy season and hydrometeorological events, Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya and National Civil Protection Coordinator Laura Velázquez Alzúa led an extraordinary session of the State Civil Protection Council and the establishment of a command post in Tamaulipas.
During the event held at the Polyforum in Ciudad Victoria—attended by officials from all three levels of government, mayors, and representatives from the Security Roundtable—it was announced that 324 temporary shelters have been readied and strategically distributed across the state to ensure public safety.
Governor Villarreal Anaya emphasized that prevention is fundamental to reducing the impact of natural phenomena. In this regard, he strongly urged mayors and municipal Civil Protection directors to keep the state’s storm drains and canals clean and free of silt and debris.
“We can mitigate the risk of flooding by up to 30% if we keep these systems properly maintained,” the governor noted, recalling that during previous weather events, accumulated trash and bridge blockages were decisive factors in urban flooding.
As part of the prevention strategy, the State introduced the “Clima Tamaulipas” tool, which utilizes 20 new weather stations located at strategic points. This network will provide real-time data, significantly improving forecasting capabilities and decision-making regarding potential weather threats.
The governor recalled past experiences, such as the impact of Storm Barry, where coordination between the state and federal governments—through the deployment of the DN-III Plan and the Marina Plan—was crucial in safeguarding families. The Command Post will operate throughout the season.
“Our goal is to present a united front. Civil protection is a task that involves us all—health, security, and social assistance agencies, civil society, and productive sectors. If we act promptly and in coordination, we will avoid greater costs and, above all, protect the well-being of the people of Tamaulipas,” he concluded.
The Command Post established today will enable continuous monitoring throughout the hurricane season, integrating the equipment, specialized vehicles, aircraft, and medical emergency coordination centers available to the state to ensure an efficient response to any contingency.
