Recognition of the Avocado Belt of Michoacán protects more than 150,000 jobs

The designation aims to preserve the origin, identity, and productive heritage of the avocado.

The Michoacán Avocado Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) protects an economic activity that generates more than 150,000 direct and indirect jobs and recognizes a producing region comprised of 31 municipalities, reported the Ministry of Economic Development (Sedeco).

In a statement, the state agency indicated that this designation seeks to preserve the origin, identity, and productive heritage of the Michoacán avocado, whose characteristics are linked to the region’s geographic, climatic, and productive conditions.

This region encompasses the activity of 48,000 producers and includes municipalities such as Apatzingán, Uruapan, Tancítaro, Peribán, Los Reyes, Tacámbaro, and Zitácuaro, among others.
