Road modernization is progressing in Sonora: six projects have already been completed and four are almost finished

The modernization of federal highways is progressing in several areas of Sonora with an announced investment of 1.632 billion pesos for highway maintenance and preservation, Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño reported. He highlighted the coordination between the Government of Sonora and the Government of Mexico, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The projects include strategic sections of the Cananea–Ímuris, Janos–Agua Prieta, Agua Prieta–Cananea, Santa Ana–Sonoyta, and Moctezuma–Agua Prieta highways, as well as additional preservation work in other parts of the state and educational infrastructure projects.

Which Highways in Sonora Have Already Been Upgraded?

Durazo stated that, as a result of the collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), the first phase of the Periodic Highway Preservation Program began in Ímuris on April 23.

During this phase, 228.6 million pesos were allocated to 10 priority projects, six of which have already been completed:

  • Cananea–Ímuris.
  • Janos–Agua Prieta, from kilometer 116+000 to 121+000.
  • Janos–Agua Prieta, from kilometer 134+000 to 140+800.
  • Agua Prieta–Cananea.
  • Santa Ana–Sonoyta.
  • Moctezuma–Agua Prieta.

The remaining four projects are reported to be between 80% and 95% complete.

How Much Will Be Invested in Sonora’s Federal Highways?

The SICT announced an investment of 1.632 billion pesos for the maintenance and preservation of federal highways in Sonora.

The governor recalled that on May 27, a new phase of the program began in Agua Prieta, where 24 contracts were awarded with a combined investment of 643.6 million pesos.

Later, on June 20, Durazo participated in San Luis Río Colorado in the official launch of preservation work on the highway leading to the Cucapah Military Checkpoint, a project overseen by the SICT.

What Other Infrastructure Projects Are Underway in Sonora?

In addition to the highway improvements, the state government highlighted progress in educational infrastructure.

On June 30, Governor Durazo led the groundbreaking ceremony in Hermosillo for the Comprehensive Construction Project of Agricultural Technological High School (CBTA) No. 337.

According to the governor, these initiatives are part of the coordinated efforts between the Government of Sonora and the federal administration to improve transportation, promote economic development, and expand educational opportunities.
