Avocado growers’ associations in the United States, specifically in California, have formally requested that their government impose temporary restrictions and even tariffs on Mexican avocado exports.
Their argument? They accuse criminal groups in Michoacán and Jalisco of controlling orchards, illegally deforesting, hoarding water, and artificially reducing costs, which they claim creates unfair competition.
⚠️ Here’s what’s at stake:
🔹 Blockade during peak season: They are requesting import quotas from March to September, precisely when the California harvest is in full swing.
🔹 Review of the USMCA: They warn that if safety and “legality” (according to their standards) are not guaranteed, the United States should review the preferential trade agreement we have.
🚨 From the Peasant Agricultural Movement (MAC), we raise our voices:
- We demand security and the rule of law: The Mexican government must guarantee security in our producing regions, not to satisfy foreign interests, but to protect the lives and livelihoods of our farming families, who work honestly every day.
- Stop unfair competition: We cannot allow violence and organized crime to contaminate our industry and serve as an excuse to close the doors of international markets to us. The solution is not to block Mexican products, but to combat the real criminals within our own territory.
- Support for honest agriculture: We call on the authorities on both sides of the border to differentiate between honest farming and corrupt supply chains.
Mexican avocados are the fruit of the labor of thousands of farmers, not criminal groups!
