New shooting attack in Atlixcáyotl, Puebla; the perpetrator mocks authorities despite reportedly having been identified.

31

A motorist reported a new attack attributed to the alleged “Atlixcáyotl Shooter” in Puebla after his car was struck during the early hours near Plaza Angelópolis. The incident added to a series of attacks that had already reached 12 along that roadway and occurred just hours after state authorities announced they had identified a possible suspect.

The driver said the incident happened between 2:00 and 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 9, while driving along Vía Atlixcáyotl toward Tlaxcalancingo, near the Monterrey Institute of Technology (Tec de Monterrey). As he traveled through the area, he heard a loud bang that, according to his account, came from an elevated location outside.

Seconds later, he noticed an impact on the passenger-side door of his Volkswagen Pointer. He said the vehicle was hit near Angelópolis, one of the locations where reports of firearm attacks against motorists have multiplied since the beginning of the year.

The Driver Said He Found No Police at the Scene

After hearing the gunshot, the citizen stopped to wait for authorities and assist with the investigation. He stated that he did not see any police presence in the area despite the danger of remaining there.

He waited more than ten minutes and tried to determine where the shot had come from but found no clear signs or suspicious activity. He eventually drove home and, the following morning in daylight, confirmed the extent of the damage to his vehicle.

The driver, identified as Juan Michel, said he planned to file a formal complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office. Regarding the repeated attacks, he stated:

“It’s just not fair that this guy keeps shooting at cars.”

Authorities Say One Man May Be Responsible

This latest case occurred while reinforced surveillance operations continued along Vía Atlixcáyotl, implemented after the first attacks. It also came only hours after Francisco Sánchez González, head of the Puebla State Public Security Secretariat, announced that the suspected perpetrator had already been identified.

According to the investigation, the attacks recorded over the past seven months appear to have been committed by a single individual, and investigators have not identified any accomplices. The official declined to reveal the suspect’s identity to avoid compromising the investigation.

Meanwhile, residents of the Geo Villas Santa Clara area and comments circulating on social media suggested that the suspected attacker could be a university student. That theory gained traction after videos surfaced showing a young man allegedly firing shots from an apartment in Torre Nducha.

  • The driver said his Volkswagen Pointer was struck on the passenger-side door and that there were no police officers in the area.

The Suspect Has Already Been Identified

The Puebla State Public Security Secretariat (SSP) identified a man as the alleged Atlixcáyotl Shooter and submitted the results of its investigation to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) so it could request an arrest warrant. The case has involved repeated attacks against motorists since the beginning of 2026 and prompted permanent surveillance along one of the state’s busiest avenues.

As of June 21, Puebla Attorney General Idamis Pastor Betancourt had linked 10 cases to the alleged attacker and opened seven criminal investigations: six for property damage and one for bodily injury.

However, on June 26, another similar shooting targeted a white vehicle near Plaza Solesta and the CIS complex in Angelópolis. After updating the case file, the Attorney General’s Office was investigating 11 incidents supported by complaints, witness statements, forensic reports, and other evidence.

On Wednesday, July 8, 2026, Public Security Secretary Francisco Sánchez González announced that the intelligence phase of the investigation had concluded. He explained that the SSP had completed its work and that it was now up to the Public Prosecutor’s Office to finalize the case and seek an arrest warrant.

“All the investigative and intelligence work we carried out was provided to the Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office. They are finalizing the investigation so they can move on to the next step, which is obtaining the arrest warrant,” the official said after a closed-door appearance before the Public Security Commission of the Puebla Congress.

The Investigation Points to a Single Attacker

Sánchez González stated that, based on the evidence gathered by the SSP, all of the attacks along Vía Atlixcáyotl appear to have been committed by a single person. He added that authorities had identified one male suspect who acted alone.

“According to our investigation, we believe it is one person. We have identified one male. That’s all I can say for now,” he said.

The secretary declined to reveal the suspect’s identity to avoid interfering with the investigation.

Regarding the suspect’s whereabouts, he said authorities did not yet know where he was. He added that if the suspect had already left Puebla by the time the arrest warrant was issued, authorities would have to locate him wherever he might be.

“We don’t know. The Attorney General’s Office will have to complete the procedure and identify the alleged suspect. If he is no longer in the state, we will have to look for him wherever he is,” he said.

The case gained renewed attention after another attack during the early morning of June 17. Since then, investigators have analyzed trajectories, distances, timelines, and possible firing locations.

The Eight-Year-Old Boy With a Bullet Lodged in His Jawbone

The eight-year-old boy who was shot in January was identified as Jesús Elías. His mother was driving with her two children after leaving school when they were attacked on Puebla’s Periférico Ecológico highway.

After noticing blood on her son, she rushed him to the hospital, where doctors told her it was safer to leave the bullet in place because it had become embedded in his jawbone, according to an interview she gave on the podcast Historias de la Vida Real.

Prestigious University Student Accused by Residents

Residents of Geo Villas Santa Clara claimed they had identified the alleged Atlixcáyotl Shooter after 11 attacks against motorists and motorcyclists. The case eventually led to the first formal complaint for property damage and caused months of concern among local families.

The victim filed a formal complaint, making it the first official report related to these incidents, as previous cases had only been shared on social media.

Residents Traced the Shots to an Apartment in Torre Nducha

Residents said that videos circulating online showed a young man allegedly firing shots from an apartment in Torre Nducha. They claimed he was the same person responsible for the shootings reported along Vía Atlixcáyotl.

According to residents, the videos showed the apartment occupant handling what appeared to be a firearm and aiming toward nearby homes. They said several shots struck windows, water tanks, and vehicles, causing property damage.

Another Influencer Was Also Accused

Puebla-based influencer Erik Núñez posted a video on his social media accounts denying that he was the “Atlixcáyotl Shooter” after being accused because he had previously shared videos of himself pointing a laser toward vehicles from his window overlooking the avenue.
