Five spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) rescued from illegal trafficking were released into the La Encrucijada Biosphere Reserve, an area where the population has declined significantly.

The three females and two males were transported to the municipality of Acapetahua, on the state’s coast, after their reintegration was deemed viable; although they are not blood relatives, they have bonded as a stable family unit.

The animals came from seizures carried out by environmental authorities during operations targeting wildlife trafficking.
