The Mexican Consul General in Houston, María Elena Orantes, has been in Chiapas for the past five days, posting photos of her trip despite the tragedy that occurred on July 7, when a Mexican migrant was shot and killed by an agent of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Texas.
Journalist Dolia Estévez revealed that, while Houston is experiencing a crisis due to the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo at the hands of ICE, the diplomat did not return to the United States and posted photos celebrating her birthday amidst the tragedy.
On July 6, Orantes posted that she would be taking a week-long vacation to spend a few days in her hometown to “return home, hug my mother, spend time with my daughters, and reunite with my family and friends.”
A day later, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo died during an operation in Houston when an ICE agent shot him, claiming it was in self-defense because he was about to be run over. The family demands an investigation and justice.
María Elena Orante’s Facebook account shows that in recent days she visited the president of the Chiapas State Judiciary, Juan Carlos Moreno Guillén; Oswaldo Chacón Rojas, rector of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas; as well as ranchers and journalists from the state.
The meetings took place between July 7 and 10, and in each one she stated that she was reuniting with “old friends.” Her last post, on Friday night at 10:20 p.m., shows her at a restaurant with lawyer Claudia Trujillo.
On Friday, she even shared a series of photos from a pre-birthday celebration and thanked her “dear friends in the band” for singing “Las Mañanitas” to her.
Four days after the tragedy that affected the Mexican community in Houston, the consul general has not commented on the incident on her social media accounts.
For its part, the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the Mexican government will file complaints with state prosecutors and the U.S. Department of Justice regarding the deaths of Mexicans in ICE custody.
