The scandal that brought down Héctor José Contreras Mercader, former director of the Quintana Roo Tax Administration Service (SATQ), began with a photograph taken at Madison Square Garden during the NBA Finals, where he appeared in a VIP section just a few feet from Donald Trump’s box. The cost of the tickets, valued between $20,000 and $40,000, contrasted sharply with his official monthly salary of 64,000 pesos, sparking questions about his wealth and leading to his resignation on June 11, 2026.
The subsequent investigation revealed a network of alleged illicit enrichment along with his brother, Juan Arturo Contreras Mercader, a notary public in Cancún. Million-dollar contracts, shell companies, and the acquisition of a 65 million-peso mansion in Puerto Cancún were uncovered. The mansion was linked to companies such as Comerconlec S.A. de C.V. and Transportes Ejecutivos Bell, in addition to suspicious transactions at Bruraga Serv S.A.P.I. C.V.
The case exhibits a classic pattern of corruption: a public official with modest income who, through business and notary networks, multiplies his wealth in a short time. To date, neither the Contreras Mercader brothers nor the state government have offered a public explanation.
