Baja California Sur (BCS) is gearing up for the start of the summer vacation season with a positive outlook for the tourism sector. According to Fernando Ojeda, the state government’s Undersecretary of Tourism, hotel occupancy is projected to reach nearly 70% across the state’s main destinations.
The official explained that these projections are based on data provided by hotel associations and municipal tourism departments, reflecting the state’s popularity among both domestic and international travelers.
“We are looking at an occupancy rate of approximately 70 percent. This indicates a positive reception and shows that travelers are choosing us,” stated Fernando Ojeda.
Ojeda noted that each tourist destination exhibits different trends, so comparisons should only be made with other sun-and-beach destinations. In this regard, he identified Cancún and Puerto Vallarta as Baja California Sur’s main competitors, though he highlighted that Cancún handles a much larger volume of visitors.
Regarding international air connectivity, he emphasized that Los Cabos remains Mexico’s third-largest destination for international passenger arrivals, trailing only Quintana Roo and Mexico City International Airport.
Addressing the recent dip in international passenger flow to Los Cabos, the undersecretary attributed it to typical seasonal fluctuations and asserted that it does not represent a significant impact on the sector.
“Overall, we don’t see any significant impact. Of course, there will be businesses and entrepreneurs complaining about a lack of sales, but it is not a situation with a major impact,” he affirmed.
Finally, he highlighted the performance of La Paz International Airport, which has maintained favorable growth and recorded double-digit increases in passenger numbers over an extended period. He stated that this trend confirms Baja California Sur’s continued consolidation as one of the country’s most important tourist destinations.
