Weddings of Couples of Indian Origin Become Part of San Miguel de Allende’s International Romance Tourism

Weddings of couples of Indian origin are becoming an increasingly important part of the international romance tourism scene in San Miguel de Allende, a destination that has long hosted weddings for couples from the United States, Canada, Europe, and various regions of Mexico.

This emerging market segment, known for celebrations that last several days and involve higher spending per event, is joining an industry that is projected to host more than 900 weddings during 2026 and generate an economic impact of over 3 billion pesos.

Premium Weddings: Indian Weddings in San Miguel de Allende

The Director of Tourism for San Miguel de Allende, Tania Castillo, reported that during the first half of the year, the destination recorded a 10% increase in the number of weddings compared to the same period in 2025, a trend that continues to position the municipality among Mexico’s leading romance tourism destinations.

“We know how important this sector is for San Miguel de Allende. During these six months, we have seen a 10% increase compared to 2025, and we expect to host more than 900 weddings in 2026,” she said.

San Miguel de Allende is already recognized as a premier destination for weddings involving both domestic and international couples.

Its primary markets include the United States, followed by domestic travelers—especially from Mexico City and Querétaro—as well as visitors from Canada, Spain, the United Kingdom, France, and Colombia.

The president of the Association of Event Organizers and Venues of San Miguel de Allende (AORESMA), Martha Rocío López Galván, stated that wedding planners and member companies remain firmly committed to professional development and specialization in multicultural weddings.

A new market is now gaining momentum: weddings of couples of Indian origin.

According to Castillo, the municipality currently hosts between 30 and 50 Indian weddings each year, and that number continues to grow as San Miguel de Allende becomes increasingly attractive to families from India and the Indian diaspora seeking destination weddings.

“We currently host approximately 30 to 50 Indian weddings each year. It is a growing market segment. These are weddings with a high economic value and significant international visibility. It is not a mass market, but it is an extremely important premium niche with a major economic impact on the destination,” she explained.

International Recognition and Prestige

The trend gained greater visibility during 2026 after Vogue México and Vogue India published features highlighting weddings celebrated in San Miguel de Allende by couples of Indian origin or members of the Indian diaspora.

These are traditional Indian weddings—not themed events—and include ceremonies such as the Haldi, Sangeet, and other religious rituals adapted to different venues throughout the city.

For AORESMA, this growth confirms that San Miguel de Allende continues expanding its presence within one of the world’s highest-value romance tourism markets.

López Galván noted that San Miguel de Allende, already recognized as one of Mexico’s leading wedding destinations, has experienced sustained growth in this segment.

“During the first half of this year alone, we have recorded approximately 46 celebrations of this kind, confirming the growing interest this market has in our destination,” she stated.

La presidenta de AORESMA, Martha Rocío López Galván, expresó que las wedding planners y empresas afiliadas a AORESMA mantienen un firme compromiso con la profesionalización y especialización en bodas multiculturales.

Specialization in Multicultural Weddings

She explained that wedding planners and companies affiliated with AORESMA continually invest in professional training to successfully organize multicultural weddings and meet the specific requirements of each celebration.

“Wedding planners and companies affiliated with AORESMA remain firmly committed to professional development and specialization in multicultural weddings. We continuously work on training, updating protocols, understanding traditions, gastronomy, ceremonial customs, and logistical coordination to provide experiences that respect and honor the cultural richness of every celebration,” she said.

López Galván emphasized that San Miguel de Allende’s unique characteristics make it an ideal setting for couples of Indian origin.

An Exceptional Setting for Indian Weddings

“Indian weddings find an exceptional setting in San Miguel de Allende. Its colonial architecture, vibrant streets, rich cultural heritage, and the hospitality of our community create the ideal environment for multi-day celebrations filled with symbolism, tradition, and unforgettable experiences for guests,” she explained.

She added that the growth of this segment reflects the destination’s evolution within the international wedding market.

“The growth of Indian weddings confirms that San Miguel de Allende continues to evolve as a specialized and internationally competitive destination capable of hosting culturally complex celebrations while preserving the authenticity, essence, and charm that distinguish us,” she concluded.

San Miguel de Allende expects to host more than 900 weddings during 2026, generating more than 3 billion pesos annually for the local economy.

The Director of Tourism stated that expectations remain positive for continued expansion of this market.

“Today we are a benchmark for couples seeking extraordinary experiences, and our commitment is to continue raising our quality standards in order to establish ourselves as Mexico’s leading wedding destination,” said Tania Castillo, Director of Tourism.

Significant Economic Impact

“We expect nearly double the number of Indian weddings compared to last year. These weddings generate substantial economic benefits and outstanding international exposure,” Castillo added.

A typical wedding in San Miguel de Allende generates between 1.7 and 2.5 million pesos, including event planning and guest spending. However, weddings involving couples of Indian origin frequently exceed those figures because of their extended duration and the large number of specialized services required.

“These are multi-day events with a large number of guests and highly elaborate productions. They require certified wedding planners, chefs, and highly specialized catering companies to successfully organize these celebrations,” Castillo explained.

San Miguel de Allende proyecta superar las 900 bodas durante 2026, una actividad que genera más de tres mil millones de pesos al año para la economía local.

Overall, the wedding industry generates more than 3 billion pesos annually, benefiting hotels, restaurants, catering companies, florists, musicians, photographers, transportation providers, event organizers, and many other service providers.

A Wide Variety of Wedding Venues

Another reason San Miguel de Allende remains one of Mexico’s preferred wedding destinations is its wide variety of venues.

The municipality offers between 60 and 80 event venues, including colonial haciendas, hotels, vineyards, gardens, and terraces, allowing it to accommodate weddings of different sizes and styles.

“It depends on the couple’s preferences—whether they want something intimate, a hacienda, a vineyard, or a terrace. San Miguel continues to be an international hub for premium weddings,” Castillo said.

The combination of tourism infrastructure, accessibility, specialized services, and an extensive selection of venues has enabled San Miguel de Allende to maintain its position as one of the country’s premier wedding destinations.

In this context, the growth of weddings involving couples of Indian origin does not replace the destination’s existing international market but rather adds a high-spending segment that further strengthens San Miguel de Allende’s global reputation as a romance tourism destination.
