Asserting that the Maya Freight Train will finally “connect our states and open new development opportunities for the entire region,” Governor Layda Sansores highlighted the project’s true challenge following the arrival of the first 12 commercial locomotives in Puerto Morelos. The governor’s statement—made after an evaluation meeting with Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum—sets the stage for a race against time to consolidate an efficient economic network among five southeastern states by next January.
The governor’s call to strengthen regional connectivity takes on added significance at this crucial stage of the project. The first locomotives are already operating on-site, transporting the construction materials needed to complete the freight rail lines, a project aimed at strengthening logistics and trade in southern Mexico.
The start of operations in January of next year was one of the central topics of the meeting held in Quintana Roo, where Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum and Governors Mara Lezama, Joaquín “Huacho” Díaz Mena, Javier May, Eduardo Ramírez, and Layda Sansores reviewed the project’s progress along with authorities from the Ministry of National Defense, headed by General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo.
For the productive sectors of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo, the development of this infrastructure represents an opportunity to strengthen regional connectivity, facilitate the transport of goods, and boost economic activity. Technical operations continue to be managed by military engineers, while the Railway Transportation Agency, headed by Andrés Lajous, will coordinate the system’s logistics.
With the progress of the works and the upcoming launch of the service, the railway project is emerging as a key element for consolidating the economic integration of the southeast, strengthening the transpeninsular trade corridor, and expanding development opportunities for the region.
