To strengthen the quality of service provided to visitors in Guanajuato’s Magical Towns (Pueblos Mágicos), tourism police officers have completed specialized training covering visitor assistance, customer service, tourism culture, destination knowledge, emergency protocols, and incident response.
As part of the Government of the People strategy to enhance the competitiveness of the state’s tourism destinations, the Secretariat of Tourism and Identity (SECTURI) organized six Tourism Police Competency Development courses for members of the Public Security and Traffic departments from Guanajuato’s six Magical Towns.
A total of 106 municipal police officers participated in the training, which was designed to strengthen their ability to provide professional, welcoming, and specialized assistance to visitors. The program also aims to improve responses to the needs of both domestic and international tourists while contributing to a safer and higher-quality travel experience.
The initiative also supports compliance with the standards established by Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism for maintaining a destination’s designation under the Magical Towns Program.
Strengthening Tourism Security
The training forms part of Guanajuato’s broader tourism competitiveness strategy, recognizing that tourism security is one of the most important factors in developing competitive, sustainable, and high-quality destinations.
Throughout the courses, participants developed technical, operational, and customer service skills through instruction in:
- Tourism culture and hospitality
- Effective communication
- Risk management and emergency response
- Operational protocols
- Knowledge of each Magical Town’s cultural heritage and identity
- Visitor guidance and assistance for both domestic and international travelers
Improving the Visitor Experience
State officials emphasized that the continuous professional development of tourism police strengthens cooperation between municipal governments and the state administration while fostering a culture of service focused on excellence.
The initiative is expected to improve the overall tourism experience throughout Guanajuato by enhancing public safety and visitor assistance.
Additionally, the training contributes to several objectives outlined in Mexico’s National Magical Towns Strategy, particularly in the areas of:
- Professional development of tourism personnel
- Tourism security
- Integrated destination management
- Continuous improvement of public services related to tourism
These elements are considered essential for maintaining a destination’s Magical Town designation while increasing its competitiveness.
Through SECTURI, the Government of Guanajuato reaffirmed its commitment to providing ongoing training for everyone involved in the tourism value chain, helping position the state’s Magical Towns as safe, competitive destinations capable of delivering high-quality experiences while supporting local community development through tourism.
