The country is home to 454 species of snakes distributed across different regions, many of which possess unique characteristics. A notable fact is that at least one-fifth of these species produce venom with significant medical value, which is used in the development of medicines and antivenoms, according to Valeria Daniela Palacios González, a student at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
Beyond popular perception, these reptiles play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. They help regulate populations of rodents, insects, and other organisms that can become pests, contributing to the stability of food chains. During the conference “High-Risk Conservation: Venomous Snakes of Mexico,” Palacios explained that these reptiles face increasing threats from habitat loss, illegal capture, accidental and intentional killings driven by fear, and contamination caused by chemicals used in pest control. Additional pressures include climate change, competition with invasive species, and ritual practices involving snake hunting.
Snakes in Mexico: The Value of Their Venom and the Threats to Their Conservation
Snake venom is a secretion produced by specialized salivary glands and is composed primarily of proteins, enzymes, and polypeptides. This sophisticated system allows snakes to defend themselves and capture prey through hollow fangs that inject venom.
In Mexico, the Viperidae family—including rattlesnakes, lanceheads, and cantils—produces proteolytic venom, which breaks down proteins into amino acids.
Meanwhile, members of the Elapidae family—including coral snakes (Micrurus) and the marine snake Hydrophis—produce neurotoxic venom and are distinguished by their unique dentition and bright coloration.
This knowledge is essential for developing antivenoms and medical treatments, reinforcing the importance of protecting these animals despite the growing threats they face in the wild.
The situation of those dedicated to snake conservation is also concerning. The presenter noted several major obstacles, including:

- Discrimination and criminalization.
- Corruption.
- Impunity.
- Misinformation.
- Low levels of public participation.
She also highlighted the monopoly surrounding antivenom production, which limits access to effective treatments and hinders conservation efforts.

Among the primary recommendations for supporting snake conservation are joining environmental organizations, participating in wildlife protection brigades, and promoting environmental education. Effective conservation requires a collective effort that actively involves society rather than passive or isolated initiatives.
The ethology specialist emphasized that reversing the current situation will require strong community involvement along with political and institutional commitment. Participating in science outreach activities and local support networks can make a meaningful difference in the survival of Mexico’s snake species and in preserving the environmental services they provide.
