The hosting of the 70th National Tourism Assembly in Durango presents an opportunity to position the state as a leader in the Mexican film industry. During the meeting, which will bring together tourism officials from across the country, the main focus will be on film, an industry that has gained strength in the state and is celebrating seven decades of history this year.
Film will be the central theme of the national meeting.
During the presentation of the National Tourism Assembly, the Governor of Durango emphasized that this is the first time the event has departed from its traditional format, taking place in different states with a specific theme. In Durango’s case, the film industry was chosen as the central theme due to the state’s long-standing presence as a location for national and international productions.
He noted that one of the objectives will be to generate proposals that can be presented to the Mexican government to strengthen incentives for film production, given that current mechanisms are insufficient to compete with other countries that offer greater benefits to production companies.

During his presentation, he explained that countries like Colombia and Spain have more attractive support schemes for filming, through economic incentives and tax breaks that make their destinations more competitive.
In contrast, he indicated that Durango has opted to offer other types of benefits, mainly in kind, by providing locations, logistics, equipment, and various services free of charge to productions. He stated that this model allows companies to reduce expenses immediately, without having to wait for reimbursements or subsequent administrative processes, which has sparked the interest of national and international production companies.
He also announced that the federal Secretary of Tourism has been invited to a presentation in Mexico City on August 19, where Durango’s film offerings will be showcased to filmmakers and industry representatives from around the world.
August will be a hub for new productions.
Regarding the film activity scheduled for this year, he reported that August will be one of the busiest months for the sector. He specified that, once the National Fair concludes, important audiovisual projects will begin in the state.
He detailed that filming for a large-format series will begin on August 3rd, and a second production will start on August 10th, both featuring renowned artists and backed by major production studios.
Finally, he reiterated that the state is in talks with companies interested in investing in film infrastructure, such as a studio or a specialized film complex. However, he acknowledged that the success of these projects will depend largely on the implementation of more competitive federal incentives to attract long-term investments and strengthen Durango as one of the country’s leading film hubs.
