Everyone had their eyes on football this summer. Almost nobody noticed that in Incheon, South Korea, the planet’s most prestigious robotics tournament — RoboCup 2026 — was crowning its champions.
And when the judges read out the winner of the rescue robotics category, the words that echoed through the arena were: “RC UANL — FIRST PLACE.” 🏆
NotGermany. Not China. Not the United States.
MEXICO. 🇲🇽
The champions? Seven engineering students from a public university — the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León: Edaly González, Miguel Marín, Jorge Sánchez, Leonardo Dávila, Guillermo Farías, Miranda Estévez, and Tabata Leija.
Between June 30 and July 6, their team went head-to-head with 14 universities representing 10 nations — among them some of the most advanced engineering programs on the planet, from Germany, China, the USA, Thailand, Hungary, and Greece.
The star of the show was a small machine with a big mission: “NATRIX” — a compact 4.5-kilogram rescue robot, barely 24 by 27 centimeters, named after a constellation shaped like a serpent. 🐍
Its purpose is not entertainment. NATRIX was engineered for the moments when every second counts — crawling through collapsed structures, climbing over rubble, and locating survivors when disaster strikes.
One of its creators, Jorge Sánchez, described the challenge: hostile courses filled with blocks, platforms, and obstacles designed to defeat any machine. NATRIX passed them all.
Behind that gold medal were endless nights inside the university lab. Sleepless hours. Sacrificed weekends. Team member Guillermo Farías admitted that hearing the judges announce their name after so much work brought an emotion impossible to describe.
The reward for all that effort:

✈️ An automatic ticket to RoboCup 2027 in Nuremberg, Germany
🤝 A personal reception from Mexico’s ambassador in Korea, Carlos Peñafiel, who honored them on behalf of the nation
Think about that for a second. Not billionaire sponsors. Not famous tech lab. Just seven young people from Nuevo León, a 3D-printed robot, and the kind of determination that has always defined our people.
While the world watches robots designed for spectacle, Mexican students are building robots designed to rescue human lives. ❤️
That is what greatness looks like. That is Mexico
