Although visitors arrive from different parts of the world each year, the reality is that Mexican travelers are the backbone of Michoacán’s tourism sector. Approximately 97% of the tourists visiting the state are from within Mexico, mainly from Mexico City, the State of Mexico, the Bajío region, and Monterrey.

This was announced by Graciela Patiño Peña, president of the Michoacán Hotel and Motel Association, who explained that international tourism only increases during specific events such as Day of the Dead and the Morelia International Film Festival.

“Throughout the year, we are a destination for domestic tourism, and we have clearly identified where our guests come from. Mexico City is the largest source market, followed by the State of Mexico, the entire Bajío region, and Monterrey… we are a destination for Mexican travelers,” she said.

The hotel industry representative noted that understanding where visitors come from allows the sector to better focus its promotional strategies and attract more travelers during different vacation seasons.

In that regard, Oliverio Cruz Gutiérrez, president of the National Chamber of Commerce (CANACO) Morelia, said that authorities and business leaders must work together to strengthen the promotion of tourism in the state.

“We need to join efforts among all authorities, business owners, hoteliers, restaurants, tour guides, and travel agencies to promote tourism. It is a very important economic driver that should generate prosperity for the city and for Michoacán,” he stated.

He also highlighted that during the current vacation period, an increase in visitors can already be seen at Morelia’s Historic Center, Fray Antonio de San Miguel Causeway, Romance Alley, the city’s museums, and the Candy Market.

Finally, he encouraged Michoacán residents to explore these attractions themselves so they can confidently recommend them to those visiting the state.
