A video featuring alleged members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) was circulated on social media over the weekend, in which they issue a challenge while in the streets of Cotija, Michoacán.
The footage shows several heavily armed men next to pickup trucks and SUVs, wearing bulletproof vests bearing the initials of the criminal organization.
“They want to mess with us, all fours (letters, CJNG). We’re here to mess with them, assholes, mess with us,” says a man on the bed of a pickup truck, his face covered and holding a rifle.
This Monday, the Governor of the State, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, a member of the Morena party, reported that law enforcement authorities are investigating the authenticity of the video. “The prosecutor’s office is investigating, but at the moment we haven’t been able to determine the timeline of what happened, when it occurred, when it was recorded, or the specific circumstances surrounding the video,” he stated.
He affirmed that, for the moment, there have been no reports from the agencies that comprise the State Security Council regarding the presence of the armed group in Cotija.
“We don’t have any further information on this matter. We have no official reports, neither from the Municipality, nor from the armed forces stationed there, nor from the Civil Guard, which has an inter-institutional operations base in the area,” he reported.
It is worth noting that on June 3, 2024, Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa, the PAN mayor of this municipality, was assassinated by a suspected CJNG cell known as ‘Calaveras’ (Skulls).
After being pressured to reject the support of the armed forces to maintain security in the municipality, Sánchez was shot and killed by a bodyguard near the main square.
