When we think of great canyons…
Most people picture the Grand Canyon in the United States.
Its enormous rock walls.
Its immense size.
And the millions of tourists who visit it every year.
But there is one detail that surprises even many Mexicans.
Mexico is home to one of the most spectacular canyon systems on the planet.
And, in some places, it is even deeper than the famous Grand Canyon.
It is known as the Copper Canyon (Barrancas del Cobre), located in the Sierra Tarahumara of Chihuahua.
Although many people speak of it as if it were a single canyon…
It is actually an immense network made up of several canyons that, together, cover an area four times larger than the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
And here comes the surprise.
While the Grand Canyon reaches a maximum depth of about 1,800 meters…
Some canyons within the Mexican system, such as Urique Canyon (Barranca de Urique), exceed 1,870 meters in depth.
In other words…
At certain points, Mexico has canyons that are even deeper.
But the story began long before humans ever existed.
For millions of years, rivers flowed down from the Sierra Madre Occidental, slowly wearing away the volcanic rock.
Drop by drop.
Century after century.
Million after million of years.
Nature sculpted a landscape so immense that today it can even be seen from space.
The most remarkable part…
Is that these canyons are not only a geological wonder.
They have also been home to the Rarámuri people, who have learned to live among mountains, cliffs, and seemingly impossible trails for centuries.
For them, these canyons are not an obstacle.
They are home.
While thousands of visitors travel to Arizona to admire the Grand Canyon…
Northern Mexico is home to a landscape that is just as breathtaking and, in some places, even deeper.
A place where geology, history, and culture come together in a single extraordinary setting.
