Residents of the Felipe Carrillo Puerto neighborhood in northern Mérida reported the deaths of several dogs on 16th Street—between 15th and 17th Streets—after the animals allegedly consumed contaminated food. Some residents noted that the animals were foaming at the mouth, leading them to suspect poisoning.
The State Attorney General’s Office announced that it has opened an investigation file to clarify the facts. According to official information, at least six dogs were affected, and four died at the scene.
Food found as potential evidence
The incident occurred in front of a property that had previously been secured by authorities. At the site, neighbors found bags of food that will be analyzed as part of the investigation. Among the affected animals was a nursing female dog.
Following the report from citizens, security personnel cordoned off the area and notified the Attorney General’s Office. Residents also went to the agency’s offices to file a formal complaint, after reportedly being unable to report the incident via the Mérida City Council’s app due to platform malfunctions.
Neighbors stated that the Veterinary Forensic Service will intervene—once the proper procedures are followed—to determine the cause of the animals’ deaths.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to clarify the events and determine whether a crime was committed. Residents have requested that, should liability be established, the case be handled in accordance with current laws.
