Tamaulipas reported a 5.2% increase in economic activity during the first quarter of 2026, according to the State Quarterly Indicator of Economic Activity (ITAEE) published by INEGI. The growth comes as the state continues to develop strategic infrastructure and foreign trade projects, particularly in Nuevo Laredo.

According to the report, the state’s economic performance was supported by positive growth across all major sectors. Primary activities increased by 16.5%, secondary activities by 9.4%, and tertiary activities by 1.1%. The Ministry of Economy attributed this performance to productive diversification and initiatives aimed at strengthening investment, competitiveness, and regional development.

Ninfa Cantú Deándar, Secretary of Economy, stated that Tamaulipas continues to implement a strategy to attract investment and strengthen key sectors such as industry, foreign trade, micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and productive supply chains.

Nuevo Laredo Drives Strategic Infrastructure Projects

Within this framework, Nuevo Laredo has become the center of several projects directly linked to commercial activity.

Among them is the expansion of the Nuevo Laredo III International Bridge, which will increase capacity from eight to eighteen lanes through the expansion of the existing bridge and the construction of a new parallel structure. According to the state government, the project is intended to increase the capacity of the region’s primary commercial border crossing and improve the flow of goods between Mexico and the United States.

Another major development is the new headquarters of the National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM) in Nuevo Laredo, inaugurated in January 2026 with an investment of 4 billion pesos. Federal and state authorities described the facility as a strategic project designed to improve customs efficiency and strengthen the logistical competitiveness of the border region.

New Investments Support Economic Growth

Economic activity is also reflected in new business investment projects.

The Government of Tamaulipas reported that during 2026, investments totaling 221 million U.S. dollars were confirmed in strategic municipalities, including Nuevo Laredo, with the expectation of creating 1,485 direct jobs.

With these initiatives, Nuevo Laredo continues to play a key role in the state’s economic growth strategy, driven primarily by its customs infrastructure, foreign trade operations, and its integration into North America’s logistics and supply chains.

Official information indicates that the state’s economic growth is closely tied to tangible infrastructure projects in Nuevo Laredo, particularly the ANAM headquarters and the expansion of the Nuevo Laredo III International Bridge, both considered essential to strengthening cross-border trade and regional competitiveness.
