Greater investment is needed in maintaining the electrical power distribution network, as the current infrastructure is operating with overloaded nodes and a rebound in economic activity could increase the risk of power outages.
René Romandía, Director of the Supply Committee of Index Zona Costa BC, stated that the region’s energy capacity has already been exceeded, although the current economic slowdown has temporarily reduced pressure on the system.
He explained that many manufacturing companies are currently operating at less than 60% of their installed capacity, which has helped keep electricity consumption lower.
“Today, many companies are not operating at 100% of their capacity; they’re working at 60% or even 50%,” he said.
A Stronger Electrical Grid Will Be Essential
Romandía warned that this situation is only temporary and that once the manufacturing sector returns to normal production levels, a stronger electrical grid will be essential.
“More electricity must be generated, and greater investment is needed in the power grid,” said the Index Zona Costa BC representative.
He noted that power outages pose a significant risk to industrial facilities because they halt production and can damage automated equipment and electronic control boards in machinery worth thousands of dollars.
Voltage Surges Affect Electronic Systems
He added that voltage spikes caused by service interruptions particularly affect the electronic systems used in manufacturing processes.
Romandía also warned that Tijuana’s urban expansion and the growth of vertical housing developments will increase electricity demand, making it essential to expand and maintain the distribution infrastructure.
For this reason, he called on the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and the federal government to allocate additional resources to modernize the electrical grid.
He also emphasized that companies themselves should properly manage their electricity consumption to help reduce strain on the power system.
