Congress of Campeche Publishes Human Rights Defenders and Journalists Protection Bill as Executive Initiative

After Movimiento Ciudadano (MC) promoted and introduced the Law for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists of the State of Campeche, the official website of the Congress of Campeche published that the initiative had been submitted by the Executive Branch, through the Secretary of Government, Víctor Sarmiento Maldonado.

According to the publication, the initiative proposes the creation of a State Protection Mechanism, as well as the establishment of an Interinstitutional Committee, an Advisory Council, and a State Executive Coordination Office to strengthen the protection of human rights defenders and journalists in Campeche.

The publication only mentions the president of the Congress, José Antonio Jiménez Gutiérrez, stating that the initiative will begin the corresponding legislative process.

However, questions have been raised about why the proposal is being attributed to the administration of Governor Layda Sansores. Critics have questioned whether this is another strategy by the governor to silence journalists who are critical of her administration, and whether the legislation is being aligned with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s proposal regarding audience rights, despite Representative Pedro Hernández MacDonald warning that it conflicts with the version originally introduced by Movimiento Ciudadano.
