Powerful Waves from Hurricane Genevieve Partially Collapse Las Palmitas Hotel in Colima
The intense waves generated by Hurricane Genevieve caused the partial collapse of Las Palmitas Hotel, located on Tecuanillo Beach in the municipality of Tecomán, Colima, on Wednesday. The force of the sea also knocked down part of the promenade wall, leaving a scene that surprised both residents and visitors.
Although the building had already suffered damage from coastal erosion and was operating only its restaurant, the stronger waves ultimately caused part of the structure to collapse. Authorities have confirmed that no injuries have been reported.
Why Did Las Palmitas Hotel Collapse?
According to Civil Protection authorities, the collapse was likely related to the long-period swell that has affected Colima’s coastline for months and intensified due to the wave activity associated with Hurricane Genevieve.
The waves repeatedly struck the building until part of the structure and the protective seawall gave way. Authorities urged the public to avoid entering the beach or approaching the affected area, as hazardous conditions remain.
Civil Protection Issues Strong Wave Warning
Authorities advised the public to avoid recreational activities along the coast while dangerous conditions continue.
The main recommendations include:
- Do not enter the ocean.
- Stay away from damaged structures.
- Respect restricted and cordoned-off areas.
- Follow all instructions issued by Civil Protection authorities.
A Farewell to Las Palmitas Hotel
Following the collapse, the hotel’s owners shared a farewell message remembering the history of the property, founded by Don Adán Cobián, and thanking the families and visitors who made Las Palmitas a special gathering place for generations.
In their message, they said that although the building was lost to the power of the sea, the memories of vacations, family reunions, and special moments spent on Tecuanillo Beach will remain.
“The walls may fall, but no one will ever erase the memories, friendships, and experiences that were lived at Las Palmitas.”
