Mexico–Guadalajara Train Route Officially Confirmed Through 10 Municipalities in Jalisco

Mexico’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) has officially confirmed the route for the Mexico–Guadalajara Passenger Train along the Irapuato–Guadalajara section, which will pass through 10 municipalities in the state of Jalisco.

The selected municipalities, together with the state government, will commit to cooperating in securing the necessary right-of-way for the railway wherever it crosses their territory, according to a draft cooperation agreement sent to local governments.

The 10 municipalities, in the order of the planned stations, are:

  • San Diego de Alejandría
  • Arandas
  • San Ignacio Cerro Gordo
  • Tepatitlán de Morelos
  • Acatic
  • Zapotlanejo
  • Tonalá
  • Tlaquepaque
  • Guadalajara
  • Zapopan

According to the draft agreement:

“The municipalities agree to implement exemptions related to the legal procedures required for acquiring the right-of-way and to carry out administrative measures and actions aimed at simplifying the necessary procedures for the construction of the railway tracks, terminals, and auxiliary buildings for the ‘Irapuato–Guadalajara’ passenger train.”

Municipal governments and decentralized public agencies will provide the SICT, free of charge, with administrative services such as:

  • Cadastral certificates
  • Water and property tax clearance certificates
  • Property transfer documentation
  • Cadastral subdivision procedures

The Zapopan City Council approved the signing of the agreement during its regular council meeting on Thursday.

In addition to the mayors of the ten municipalities, the agreement will also be signed by Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, Mexico’s Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, Pablo Lemus Navarro, Governor of Jalisco, along with other federal and state officials.

Plans to begin construction of the Irapuato–Guadalajara rail segment during the 2027 fiscal year were first reported in December 2025 by the SICT Jalisco Center.

At this stage, the only confirmed station will be located on Washington Avenue in Guadalajara.
