MUBI Fest Will Arrive in Guadalajara for the First Time
For the first time, MUBI FEST will be held in Guadalajara, Jalisco, bringing the international film festival to the city from September 18 to 20, 2026.
The event will take place at the Cineteca Universidad de Guadalajara, which will serve as the main venue for the festival’s screenings and activities. Guadalajara is one of 10 international cities hosting MUBI FEST during 2026.
The festival’s program includes 22 films, with a combination of Mexican premieres, international cinema, restored classics, special screenings, outdoor screenings, talks and other cultural activities.
Films and Mexican Premieres
Among the productions arriving in Guadalajara are several films being presented in Mexico for the first time.
One of the highlights is Her Private Hell, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, known for films such as Drive. The festival will also present Sheep in the Box, directed by Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, and Hope: El primer impacto, by South Korean director Na Hong-jin.
Another featured title is Rose, directed by Markus Schleinzer and starring Sandra Hüller. The film is set in the early 17th century and follows a small German community whose circumstances change when a soldier arrives to claim land.
The program also includes recent productions such as The Chronology of Water, the directorial debut of actress Kristen Stewart, as well as Rosebush Pruning, Adolescence, Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo and Flies.
Classics and Restored Films
MUBI FEST Guadalajara will also give audiences the opportunity to see internationally recognized films on the big screen.
The selection includes Akira, directed by Katsuhiro Ōtomo; Ghost in the Shell, by Mamoru Oshii; and Children of Men, directed by Alfonso Cuarón.
Mexican and Latin American cinema will also have a presence through films such as The Castle of Purity, by Arturo Ripstein, and The Holy Girl, by Lucrecia Martel. The program includes restored films and screenings designed to highlight important works from different periods of cinema.
Among the confirmed screenings is The Castle of Purity, which will be shown on September 18 at 7:30 p.m. and again on September 20 at 3:00 p.m. at the Cineteca Universidad de Guadalajara.
Outdoor Screenings and Free Activities
The festival will also include screenings outside the traditional cinema setting.
One of the confirmed outdoor presentations is PULP: What Do You Do for an Encore?, a documentary directed by Garth Jennings about the British band Pulp. The screening is scheduled for September 19 at 7:00 p.m. and admission is listed as free.
The program also includes free activities such as MUBI Library, which will feature materials and encounters related to MUBI Notebook, MUBI Editions and the MUBI podcast Encuentros.
Music will also be part of the festival. The program includes a live presentation by Lila Avilés and the Ensamble Mujeres del Viento Florido, along with DJ sets and other musical activities.
Special Guest and Cultural Activities
Argentine filmmaker Martín Rejtman will participate as a special guest. He is scheduled to present his 1999 film Silvia Prieto and participate in a conversation with the audience.
The festival will also offer spaces dedicated to film publications, discussions and other activities beyond the screenings. A MUBI Shop, MUBI Library and a food area featuring local culinary options will be part of the overall experience.
With its arrival in Guadalajara, MUBI FEST expands its international presence while bringing a selection of contemporary cinema, classics, Mexican premieres and cultural activities to the city’s film community.
The festival will take place from September 18 through 20, 2026, at the Cineteca Universidad de Guadalajara in Zapopan.
