Estefani Conte, a patient in Mexico City, was spared a multi-million peso bill after a clinic demanded she sign a blank promissory note to begin a scheduled surgery.
“This was despite the fact that payment had already been agreed upon and my insurance company was going to cover it. They told me it was a normal procedure, but my insurance agent and lawyers warned me that this way they could inflate the medical expenses to the point of making them unaffordable,” she stated.
Several experts told her that this is a very common practice among private hospitals to extort money from their patients. Once the promissory note is signed, if it isn’t paid, they often call the police.
Estefani emphasized that, as recommended, she has already filed a complaint with the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco). Meanwhile, after the video of the incident went viral, Hospital Médica Sur claimed that the promissory note was no longer necessary.
