Along the length and breadth of the country, inspection checkpoints have been set up where officers stop virtually every vehicle unfortunate enough to encounter them. Using countless excuses and intimidation tactics, they allegedly succeed in practically robbing citizens.
Despite the long list of complaints, grievances, and even formal letters sent to President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo denouncing the endless acts of extortion allegedly committed daily by members of the Federal Ministerial Police (PFM), the officers in question continue to rob Mexican citizens who, for one reason or another, pass through these checkpoints.
Travelers commonly known as paisanos who live in the United States, vacationers, truck drivers, and anyone traveling by motor vehicle are reportedly victims of extortion by the Federal Ministerial Police, with no one appearing to put a stop to these practices.
On the Gómez Palacio–Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua highway alone, the officers reportedly set up as many as four checkpoints. According to complaints, rather than serving to detect suspicious activities, these checkpoints are allegedly used to strip travelers of thousands of pesos, in some cases as much as 30,000 pesos, based on victims’ testimonies.
According to those affected, these actions could even be taking place with the approval of President Claudia Sheinbaum, given that the officers allegedly operate with complete impunity to the detriment of travelers.
What is certain, according to the accusations, is that the Federal Ministerial Police allegedly operate every day of the week and at all hours. Whether under extreme heat, torrential rain, or temperatures below freezing, they reportedly show no mercy and allegedly take money from every motorist who crosses their path.
