Mayan communities and various organizations have called for a march in Mérida on August 9 to denounce alleged violations of their rights and the expansion of real estate projects.
The demonstration will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Remate de Paseo de Montejo and will end at Plaza Grande, where participants plan to issue a public statement regarding the conflicts they are facing in different areas of the state.
Organizers stated that community leaders have been subjected to criminalization for defending their territories against real estate companies and pig farms.
Territorial Defense and Environmental Concerns
Federico May, from the Kinchil Community Council, explained that the march will highlight issues such as land dispossession, the installation of pig farms, and other projects that, according to residents, generate serious pollution and contribute to the loss of community lands.
The organizers expect participation from residents of communities affected by conflicts involving cenotes, natural reserves, ejido lands, and development projects, with the goal of presenting a united front to defend their rights.
Last week, a demonstration was held at the Monumento a la Patria, where environmental activists protested against the construction of an apartment complex in the dunes of Chuburná Puerto.
Additionally, residents of Molas, a district of Mérida, marched to demand the removal of pig farms that they accuse of contaminating the area’s cenotes.
