For the third consecutive day, violent incidents and clashes between suspected organized crime members and security forces were reported on Monday in the state of Zacatecas.
Around noon, three women, including a minor, were attacked while traveling in a white SUV without license plates at the intersection of Tres Cruces and La Esmeralda streets in downtown Jerez de García Salinas, located about 65 kilometers west of the state capital.
According to information confirmed by local authorities, a man traveling in another vehicle opened fire on the SUV with a high-powered rifle, firing more than 20 rounds, causing panic among residents.
One of the adult women died while being transported to a hospital for medical treatment. The other two victims were hospitalized with injuries caused by high-caliber gunfire.
Military Personnel Ambushed in Joaquín Amaro
In a separate incident, Zacatecas Secretary General of Government Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza confirmed during a press conference that armed individuals attacked a group of approximately 30 members of the Mexican Army and security forces who were conducting an operation in the community of El Plateado, in the municipality of Joaquín Amaro, about 124 kilometers southeast of the city of Zacatecas.
Soldiers and police returned fire, killing one suspected attacker and arresting two suspected gunmen, both of whom are minors.
Authorities Investigate Vehicle Linked to Multiple Homicide Case
The official also reported that, following the confrontation that occurred on Saturday in the municipality of Calera, authorities seized weapons and two pickup trucks allegedly used by a criminal cell.
He added that the Zacatecas State Attorney General’s Office is investigating whether one of the seized vehicles—based on its characteristics and stolen vehicle report—belonged to one of the ten victims of the multiple homicide that occurred on July 18.
“One of the vehicles used by the attackers during the confrontation in the municipality of Calera may correspond to one of the stolen vehicles linked to one of the victims of the events that occurred on July 18,” Reyes Mugüerza said.
However, he emphasized that this information has not yet been confirmed and remains under investigation by the authorities responsible for the case.
