Freight Train Derails in Tecomán, Colima; Authorities Secure Area
A freight train derailed on Sunday in the municipality of Tecomán, Colima, prompting a large-scale response from federal authorities and railway personnel after at least 12 railcars carrying powdered mineral left the tracks.
The accident occurred near the community of Madrid, close to the Ojito de Agua recreational area. The affected section of railway lies between an area known as El Túnel and the El Estanque resort, where the terrain complicated the initial inspection efforts.
Images from the scene show the extent of the derailment, with several railcars severely damaged and off the tracks. Some of the heavy metal cars were stacked on top of one another, while others came to rest alongside the railway.
One of the main concerns is that several of the derailed railcars remain suspended on a steep slope, creating the risk of further collapses during recovery operations. As a result, the area remains under strict security.
No Injuries Reported
As of the time of publication, authorities had reported no injuries or fatalities resulting from the derailment.
The official cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
Railway company personnel are working at the site to assess the extent of the damage. Their initial efforts include inspecting the condition of the tracks and planning the complex operation required to remove the damaged railcars and recover the spilled mineral.
Because the train was transporting mineral, authorities will also evaluate the condition of the cargo and determine whether the accident caused structural damage to the railway infrastructure.
Officials are expected to release additional information as the technical investigation progresses, including the cause of the derailment and an estimated timeline for restoring rail service along the affected section.
Federal Security Operation Underway
As part of the emergency response, members of the Mexican Army and the National Guard established a security perimeter around the accident site.
According to authorities, the operation aims to prevent theft of the cargo and keep unauthorized individuals away from the hazardous area while emergency crews and railway personnel carry out recovery and cleanup operations.
