Fifth Avenue is going dark.

Around 70 businesses have closed along Playa del Carmen’s Fifth Avenue. What was once the city’s vibrant tourism hub now has more and more empty storefronts and businesses that simply could not survive.

Business owners point to several causes: a growing perception of insecurity, the impact of the sargassum crisis, fewer visitors, rising operating costs, increasing permit and administrative fees, and the lack of an effective strategy to revive the local economy.

While the government highlights new projects, events, and promotional campaigns, dozens of entrepreneurs have been forced to close businesses that represented years of hard work, investment, and employment for hundreds of families.

The question is unavoidable: Who is accountable for the jobs that have been lost and for the business owners who had to give up on their dream of investing in Playa del Carmen?

Without the spin: A tourist destination is not sustained by speeches. It is sustained by public safety, confidence for investors, support for local businesses, and a government that addresses the root causes of its challenges before it is too late.
