As part of the actions promoted by the Government of Tamaulipas to strengthen biodiversity conservation and encourage citizen participation in the care of ecosystems, the El Cielo Biosphere Ecological Park participated in Blitz Monarca 2026, an international initiative dedicated to monitoring and conserving the habitat of the Monarch Butterfly.
Through the Tamaulipas Commission for Parks and Biodiversity (CPBT), a workshop was held at the Multitheater of the El Cielo Biosphere Ecological Park, where children, young people, and adults learned more about the importance of this emblematic species of Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
During the activity, participants worked with educational materials from Monarch Joint Venture, an organization dedicated to Monarch Butterfly conservation, through exercises related to the different stages of its life cycle: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult butterfly.
They also learned about the characteristics of the Monarch’s habitat and the importance of the natural resources it encounters during its fall and spring migration routes.
As part of the event, participants later took a walk along different trails in Gómez Farías, where they identified species of flora and fauna, as well as plants and other elements of the ecosystem that serve as shelter and a food source for pollinators.
These activities helped promote participatory science and environmental education by directly involving society in the observation and recording of the natural resources that form part of the Monarch Butterfly’s habitat.
The Executive Director of the Tamaulipas Commission for Parks and Biodiversity, Luis Eduardo García Reyes, highlighted the importance of continuing to bring the population, especially younger generations, closer to knowledge about biodiversity and the ecosystems that exist in Tamaulipas.
With the support of Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya, the Tamaulipas Commission for Parks and Biodiversity continues to promote programs and activities that strengthen conservation, environmental education, and social participation, fostering greater awareness of the importance of protecting the state’s natural heritage.
The participation of the El Cielo Biosphere Ecological Park in Blitz Monarca 2026 reaffirms Tamaulipas’ commitment to the conservation of this migratory species and the protection of the ecosystems that make its journey across North America possible.
