The city of Chihuahua ranked among the six municipalities with the highest number of femicide cases nationwide, even surpassing Ciudad Juárez, which is also among the cities with the highest levels of violence against women, according to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) as of the end of June of this year.
According to federal statistics, five femicides have occurred in the capital in six months, the same number recorded in the municipalities of Benito Juárez, in Quintana Roo; Centro, in Tabasco; and the Venustiano Carranza borough of Mexico City.
These locations are surpassed by the city of Culiacán, Sinaloa, with 29 victims, and Reynosa, Tamaulipas, with 10.
Ciudad Juárez appears on the list with four cases, the same number recorded in Hermosillo, Sonora, and Mexicali, Baja California. Meanwhile, Cuauhtémoc is the third municipality in the state to be part of the top 20, with three femicides, tied with 10 other municipalities.
At the state level, the Secretariat recorded 14 victims, according to information provided by the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE). Of these, 10 were between 30 and 60 years old, two were between 18 and 29, one was a girl aged 12 or younger, and another was over 60 years old.
This placed Chihuahua in eighth place among the country’s federal entities. This represents a decrease in the incidence, since last year the state was among the three with the highest incidence, with 21 victims in six months.
However, with 46 cases, Chihuahua is the fifth state with the highest number of intentional homicides of women, meaning those that were not committed for gender-related reasons, thus distinguishing them from femicide.
In addition, the state maintains first place in cases of women who were victims of kidnapping, with 19, far above second-place Michoacán, which recorded five cases during the first half of the year.
Ten of the kidnapping victims this year were between 30 and 60 years old; five were between 18 and 29; two were between 0 and 12 years old; one was over 60; and in one case the age was not specified.
In addition to the crime statistics, Chihuahua has for a long time remained the second state with the highest number of telephone reports of violence against women.
Between January and June, the 911 emergency line received 27,906 calls related to these incidents, equivalent to 19.9% of the 140,051 calls made nationwide.
The state was surpassed only by Mexico City, which recorded 29,382 reports. However, Chihuahua has the highest rate per 100,000 women, with 1,366.19 calls.
Regarding emergency calls related to incidents of sexual abuse, committed against both men and women, the state recorded 348 reports, equivalent to 7.9% of the national total of 4,390.
In this category, Chihuahua was surpassed only by Baja California, Sonora, and Mexico City, which recorded 599, 434, and 372 calls, respectively.
The state’s rate was 8.51 calls per 100,000 inhabitants, the fourth highest in the country, which had a rate of 3.27 calls.
Regarding incidents of sexual harassment or sexual intimidation, also committed against both sexes, the number of calls recorded in the state was 645, representing 9% of the 7,205 reported nationwide.
This made Chihuahua the third state with the highest incidence, after Baja California (702) and Mexico City (652).
It also had the third-highest rate for this offense, with 15.78 calls per 100,000 inhabitants, while the national rate was 5.36.
The states that surpassed Chihuahua in the rate of reports for these offenses were Colima and Baja California.
Regarding calls concerning rape cases, the state recorded 100, or 6.9% of the 1,448 reported nationwide. It ranked fourth, behind Mexico City (166), Jalisco (141), and the State of Mexico (135).
The rate for this offense was 2.45 per 100,000 inhabitants, the second highest in the country and surpassed only by Quintana Roo, with 4.06 calls.
