Books Mexico: Best-selling titles on Amazon – August 21

1413

Books are a strong competitor to streaming platforms, because just like Netflix, HBO, and Disney, these stories are capable of keeping their audiences on the edge of their seats. Amazon has recognized this and has invested in selling books through its platform.

Despite having emerged centuries ago, books have gone through a series of technological innovations that have improved not only the preservation and reproduction of texts, but also access to information and entertainment.

The world is now far removed from the printing of The Diamond Sutra, the oldest surviving printed book, which, according to estimates, was distributed in 868 by the Chinese printer Wang Jie. It is also far removed from 1440, when Johannes Gutenberg invented the movable-type printing press and created the first book of the modern era, known as the Gutenberg Bible or Mazarin Bible, which contained 1,282 pages with 42 lines on each page.

Today, readers can choose to read titles in paperback format or even access electronic tablets and Kindle, Amazon’s exclusive e-book reader.

However, one of the problems that can arise in today’s fast-paced world is the challenge of choosing what to read amid a wave of titles and authors from different genres and countries. Amazon Mexico’s regularly updated list of the 10 most popular titles could be a useful guide for deciding what to read next.

Mexico and Its Readers

The percentage of the reading population in Mexico stood at 68.5%, with an average of 3.4 books per year, the lowest level since the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) began conducting the Reading Module (MOLEC) in 2016.

According to statistics released in the 2023 edition, the reading population aged 18 and over decreased by 3.3 percentage points compared with 2022. Compared with the first measurement in 2016, which also recorded the highest figure at 80.8%, the number of readers decreased by 12.3 percentage points.

By gender, men took the lead and reported higher reading rates (71.7%) compared with women (65.7%). The average length of a continuous reading session was 42 minutes.

Regarding age groups, it was found that the Mexican reading population decreases as age increases. Among younger groups, specifically those aged 18 to 24 and 25 to 34, the reading pattern was similar: eight out of every 10 people read. However, as age increased, there was a gradual decline. For example, among women aged 65 and older, the figure fell to five out of every 10 readers, while among men it fell to six out of every 10.

By type of reading material, books were among the most widely read, at 40.8%, followed by websites, forums, or blogs, at 37.7%. Magazines ranked third, at 23.6%, followed by newspapers, at 18.5%, and comic books, at 6.1%.

When comparing reading materials by age, websites are the favorite among people aged 18 to 34, while books receive greater support from people over 35, particularly adults aged 65 and older.

Regarding the reason people chose to read, 44.6% said it was for entertainment; 26.5% said it was because of work or studies; 19.2% said they read for general knowledge; 9.4% for religious reasons; and 0.3% for another reason.
