Freight transportation did not suffer any disruptions in Michoacán following the blockades carried out by organized crime groups in the state on Wednesday, said Augusto Ramos, president of the National Chamber of Freight Transportation (Canacar).
The leader explained that Canacar has two delegations in Michoacán, located in Lázaro Cárdenas and Morelia, from which actions were coordinated with the federal government to anticipate the response of criminal groups and prevent disruptions to the movement of goods.
“In both cases, we anticipated the situation and, thanks to them, we did not even have any obstruction to freight transportation regarding the movement of goods. It was very well coordinated thanks to their intervention and collaboration with the government,” he said.
Ramos pointed out that the modus operandi of criminal groups that carry out blockades consists of putting pressure on freight and passenger transportation. For this reason, he highlighted the importance of coordination with the various security agencies of the federal government to reduce operators’ vulnerability.
“We cannot allow operators’ lives to be vulnerable, much less have any fatalities, and that is why from day one of that administration we asked them to help us with information to prevent fatalities,” he said.
The president of Canacar indicated that this is not the first time the organization has anticipated possible highway blockades, with the aim of informing transport operators and recommending alternative routes to maintain the movement of goods.
However, he warned that there are still pending security issues, particularly freight transportation theft, a crime that, despite the measures implemented by authorities, continues to represent a burden for the sector.
