During Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco’s recent visit to South Korea, various topics related to energy, the economy, technology, and culture were discussed.
One of the most prominent issues was the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries, negotiations for which are expected to resume once talks on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) with the United States conclude, according to South Korean outlet Yonhap News.
In an interview, the Mexican official said that Mexico maintains an active dialogue with U.S. authorities regarding the bilateral trade environment, with the agreement being a priority for the country and of interest to South Korean companies.
“We intend to continue trade discussions with Korea in the future, but naturally, at this time, we are investing most of our time and resources in dialogue with the United States,” Velasco told the Asian press.
Mexico and South Korea Strengthen Economic Ties
Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco Álvarez concluded his official visit to South Korea on July 25, focused on strengthening economic ties and promoting cooperation across various strategic sectors.
According to information provided by Mexico’s Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE), the Mexican foreign minister met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, Cho Hyun, with whom he followed up on the guidelines established in the Mexico-Korea Action Plan 2026–2030. The plan will be signed when South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum meet in Mexico City.
He also held talks with Wi Sung-lac, South Korea’s National Security Adviser, with the aim of exchanging views on the international and regional environment. In this context, they agreed to strengthen bilateral ties, share knowledge, and advance cooperation in areas including aerospace engineering, artificial intelligence, digital governance, defense, and security.
During a meeting with So Young Kim, Vice President of Foreign Relations at the Center for Science Diplomacy of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and Han Seung Hun, Director of the Office of International Development, discussions focused on mutual interest in advancing a joint initiative to promote exchanges between the two nations through high-quality educational programs specializing in engineering, technological development, and semiconductors.

The head of the SRE held talks with Samsung E&A President and CEO Namkoong Hong, as well as the South Korean company’s executive team, as part of his working agenda in the Asian country.
Through its X account, the Mexican government agency reported that during the meeting, both sides discussed various strategic projects being developed in Mexico, particularly in the energy sector.
They also exchanged views on potential agreements in sectors that could benefit both the company and Mexico as part of the Plan Mexico.
