The United States has revoked the visa of Ana Paty Peralta, mayor of Benito Juárez, Quintana Roo, as well as those of her husband and father-in-law, amid investigations that have placed her administration under scrutiny.
According to information published by El Financiero, Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR) has reportedly opened lines of investigation into alleged diversion of public resources, possible operations related to tax fuel smuggling, and alleged contacts with individuals linked to the Sinaloa Cartel.
One of the investigations is also reportedly seeking to determine whether municipal resources or structures could have been used to politically benefit Rafael Marín Mollinedo.
So far, the United States has not publicly explained why the visas were revoked. Therefore, it has not been confirmed that the decision is directly related to the investigations being conducted in Mexico. There is also no court ruling establishing the allegations against the mayor.
Nevertheless, the case has once again placed Cancún under the spotlight, with a mayor whose U.S. visa has been revoked and a series of federal investigations that will now have to determine how far the alleged irregularities extend.
