The final week of the summer vacation ended with a 51.7 percent tourist occupancy rate in Playa del Carmen, Berenice Briseño, municipal secretary of tourism, revealed this morning.
In an interview this morning, the municipal official explained that the overall occupancy figure recorded throughout the entire vacation season is still being calculated, but it is expected to be released after September 15, when tourism authorities announce the “accumulated” figures for the entire summer.
Without providing further details about the summer season, the secretary said she was confident that the upcoming winter holidays would produce “good numbers” in terms of occupancy for Playa del Carmen. She emphasized that the department under her responsibility is working to ensure good occupancy levels in this tourist destination during September and October.
The official invited business owners to work hand in hand with authorities to promote the destination at tourism events and promotional caravans that will take place throughout the country in the coming weeks.
She said that advantage should be taken of the fact that sargassum arrivals have decreased considerably in Playa del Carmen in order to attract tourists who stopped coming during the summer vacation because of the presence of the macroalgae.
“Today the beaches are spectacular. Let’s enjoy the fact that there is no sargassum today; let’s enjoy that we live in paradise. (…) Let’s invite the public, and let’s not limit ourselves only to the people of Playa del Carmen. Today we have a spectacular beach, so let’s invite them to come, and, well, I would simply say that Playa del Carmen, that we are the heart of the Riviera Maya, is a spectacular place,” the official concluded.
