The modernization of the Toluca–Zihuatanejo highway, which includes an investment of 26.969 billion pesos, will reduce travel times between the Toluca Valley and Guerrero’s Costa Grande by up to two hours, President Claudia Sheinbaum reported.
The project, which began in 2025 and is part of one of the priority areas of the National Infrastructure Plan, includes work on 372 kilometers of highway and is scheduled to be completed in 2029, with operations beginning in December of that same year.
According to the project, 38 kilometers correspond to the Toluca–Temascaltepec section, in the State of Mexico. This road will be upgraded as part of the modernization work and will improve connections between municipalities in the southern part of the state.
One of the main benefits of the project will be the reduction in travel times. Currently, the journey between the Toluca Valley and Guerrero’s Costa Grande can take between seven and eight hours. With the modernization, the trip is expected to be completed up to two hours faster.
The Government of the State of Mexico highlighted that the highway is a strategic route connecting central Mexico with the Pacific coast, facilitating the movement of people and goods between the State of Mexico, Michoacán, and Guerrero, while also promoting economic activity in the communities located along the route.
It also stated that it maintains permanent coordination with the Federal Government to promote road infrastructure that brings communities closer together, reduces travel times, and contributes to regional development.
