Mexico’s Government has dealt another blow to drug trafficking. Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security, reported this Friday the seizure of more than 16 tons of methamphetamine in Sinaloa, describing it as “one of the most important blows against synthetic drug production during this Administration.” According to the official’s social media posts, an operation on September 3 also dismantled the second-largest methamphetamine laboratory discovered so far during the current administration. The complex, located near Corralejo, covers an area of 5,700 square meters.
Through a statement, the Government specified that the seizure of 16.8 tons of methamphetamine, 645 liters of product undergoing processing, and more than 7.6 tons of precursors, essential chemicals, and dual-use substances was the result of three separate operations in the northern state. The other two operations contributing to this major seizure were carried out on September 2, one in Corralejo and the other in Corral Viejo. The first location covered an area of 800 square meters, while the second covered 450 square meters.
The operation involved the participation of the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), and the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic. García Harfuch emphasized that the operation was the result of work by the Naval Intelligence Unit and the exchange of information with U.S. agencies. The federal secretary added that the seizure includes more than 10 tons of chemical substances representing “an estimated $347 million impact on the criminal organization.” In his message, he stated: “The objective is to affect criminal organizations through their ability to produce drugs, cut their supply chains, and directly impact their finances.”
A few weeks ago, the official announced another major seizure in Mexicali, Baja California. On that occasion, 120 kilograms of fentanyl pills were seized in an operation that involved information from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Authorities said the property where the operation took place was linked to Los Rusos, a criminal group considered the main armed wing of La Mayiza, the faction of the Sinaloa Cartel linked to the sons of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
The Government dealt another blow to this organization earlier this week with the arrest of “El Amarillo”, a criminal leader linked to the group, in Puebla. According to García Harfuch, Govén Ulisses N operated in Acapulco and was involved in crimes including extortion, kidnapping, homicide, and drug trafficking and distribution.
