Million-Peso Robbery in Ajijic: Four Criminals Used Explosives to Steal 1.3 Million Pesos From an ATM
Authorities reported that the amount stolen from an ATM at a bank in Ajijic, Jalisco, totaled 1.3 million pesos. The incident occurred on September 3 along the Oriente highway, which connects the municipal seat of Chapala with the town.
Residents in the area said they heard a loud explosion during the night; however, they mistook it for fireworks that had been set off in the days leading up to the incident. When morning arrived, they saw that the bank’s façade had been destroyed.
“Yes, it was very loud; honestly, I fell asleep and didn’t know anything,” said a local resident.
The criminals also attempted to take a second ATM but were unsuccessful and caused severe damage to it. There are at least two security cameras on the bank’s façade that may have captured the moment of the robbery.
Four individuals allegedly participated in the robbery and fled in a sedan-type vehicle. Because no vehicle was used to pull the device out, the initial investigation indicates that the criminals used explosives to detach and remove the ATM.
