Álvaro Obregón Borough Publishes List of Injured People and the Hospitals Where They Are Receiving Treatment
An explosion was reported Friday night at an establishment in the Álvaro Obregón borough, in western Mexico City. Due to the blast, the structure gave way and caused damage to other buildings; several people were injured.
According to initial reports, the accident occurred on Alta Tensión Avenue between Santa Lucía Avenue and Prolongación San Antonio, where security personnel were deployed.
The explosion allegedly originated at a taco stand located on the ground floor of the building. Due to the force of the blast, the residence was practically left leaning on its side, while the shock wave also reached neighboring homes.
Borough personnel and paramedics were working at the scene because several people were inside the establishment at the time of the accident. The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) reported that emergency operations were taking place in the Alfarfa neighborhood.

Meanwhile, Mexico City Fire Department chief Juan Manuel Pérez Cova said that several people had been rescued and taken to a hospital for medical treatment. “We continue with search and rescue operations at the site,” he stated.
The Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) reported that an explosion occurred at the food establishment, presumably involving a 30-kilogram LP gas cylinder.
“As a result of the blast wave, 11 people were affected and have already been transferred to the hospital for treatment. Likewise, it is unfortunately reported that one person lost their life,” the agency stated.
Neighbors said there were many people in the area because there are busy businesses there at this time of night. Despite the heavy rain, rescue units continued arriving at the site of the explosion; cranes were being used to remove vehicles and create enough space to assist those affected.
“I was at home, watching TV, when the ground shook. It happened at the tacos place down the hill. It is quite busy; there were a lot of people, honestly, there were a lot of people, a lot of customers,” Mauricio Romero, a resident of the area, told N+.
Mauricio said his home is only a few meters from the site, which caused him to become frightened.
“It was pretty strong; look, the house almost fell over on its side. Poor people who were eating when the tragedy happened,” he said.
Following the explosion, Mayor Javier López said he traveled to the affected area. He expressed his condolences to the families of the injured and one of the people who died. He also asked residents not to approach the area so emergency crews could carry out their work.
According to the borough, the accident occurred at 6:50 p.m. at the “La Bajadita” taco shop, meaning the victims included employees and customers. However, several residents were also receiving treatment for nervous breakdowns.
“The Borough is maintaining a five-block perimeter around the site and continues with emergency operations,” it stated.
Mexico City prosecutors’ office personnel were at the scene to conduct the corresponding investigation and determine the exact causes of the explosion at the taco shop in Álvaro Obregón.
The head of government said that authorities were working in coordination in the Minas de Cristo neighborhood following the accident and asked the public to keep rescue vehicles and ambulances’ routes clear.
“Unfortunately, one person died and eleven hospital transfers were carried out,” she said on social media.
Later, the Secretary of Citizen Security, Pablo Vázquez, recognized members of the Banking and Industrial Police (PBI) for “acting with courage, promptness, and a commitment to public service in response to the explosion” that occurred that night.
This Saturday, the death of another person was confirmed, bringing the total number of fatalities from the incident to two.
