Authorities and members of the Jewish community accused participants of making antisemitic statements during the pro-Palestinian march held yesterday on Presidente Masaryk Avenue in the Polanco neighborhood of Mexico City, while they were celebrating their New Year.
Writer Silvia Cherem published an opinion article in which she referred to the protest held on September 11 during Rosh Hashanah and emphasized that the statements were not directed against the Israeli government or the occupation of Palestine, but against Mexican citizens of the Jewish faith.
She stated that Jews in Mexico are not foreigners and that they are part of society.
“Freedom of expression cannot serve as a pretext for intimidation, incitement to hatred, or harassment of a community outside its places of worship,” she said.
Former ambassador Nathan Wolf also joined the accusations by questioning the organization of the demonstration on social media, in which participants allegedly shouted “out with the Jews,” and he criticized the fact that it was held in front of a synagogue.
“That is not solidarity with Palestine. That is not criticism of Israel. That is antisemitism,” he wrote.
A joint statement by Tribuna Israelita and the Central Committee of the Jewish Community of Mexico condemned the chants made during the demonstration, describing them as antisemitic and as expressions of hatred and rejection toward the community.
“We thank the federal and local authorities for their support and prompt action to prevent these expressions from escalating into violent acts,” the statement said.
On the morning of September 11, a road closure was reported on Presidente Masaryk Avenue in the Polanco neighborhood due to a demonstration in which Palestinian flags were carried.
Miguel Hidalgo Mayor Mauricio Tabe condemned the chants made during the mobilization and expressed his solidarity with members of the community.
“In Miguel Hidalgo there is no place for hatred or discrimination. Our borough is a space of freedom where there is room for everyone,” he posted on his X account.
