Protesters Go to Baseball Stadium in Boca del Río to Ask Sheinbaum to Prevent Their Acquired Rights From Being Affected
Veracruz.- Claudia Sheinbaum not only found the state of Veracruz engulfed in a wave of violence, but also witnessed protests and road blockades during her tour of the port city this Thursday.
Following the controversial death of federal deputy Zenyazen Roberto Escobar García and the murder of two federal police officers, Claudia Sheinbaum’s visit was overshadowed by a wave of protests by workers from Pemex and CFE.
Today, during her visit to Boca del Río as part of her second government report, Sheinbaum Pardo was surrounded by members of the National Alliance of Retirees of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), and Development Banking.
The protesters went to the professional baseball stadium Beto Ávila, located in the Virginia neighborhood, to ask for her intervention to prevent their acquired rights from being affected.
They explained that the objective is to prevent legal modifications from being applied retroactively and affecting those who have already obtained a pension after years of work.
Led by Esmeralda Huante and Rafael Arroyo y Castillo, the CFE retirees revealed their concern that they lack mechanisms guaranteeing increases and protection of their benefits due to the modification of Article 127 of the Constitution, which establishes a cap on the pensions of workers from federal agencies.
“This constitutional modification will place not only retirees from CFE, Pemex, and Development Banking, but any Mexican whose rights could be affected by subsequent legal changes, in a vulnerable situation,” they warned.
They said they are frightened by the amendment to the law because it would affect more than 93,000 workers across the country, although approximately 2,000 people in the state of Veracruz would be affected.
