Municipal authorities from the southern region of Zacatecas: Jalpa, Huanusco, and Tabasco, together with the neighboring municipality of Calvillo, Aguascalientes, issued a call to the government of Zacatecas and federal armed forces to immediately reinforce security along Federal Highway 70, specifically on the stretch near La Higuera, in Huanusco.
The request follows recent cases of vehicles being forcibly taken from their owners, involving at least four vehicles in the area.
Among the victims who were robbed of their vehicles were a pregnant woman and a minor, who made their own way until they reached a police checkpoint in the neighboring state of Aguascalientes to request assistance.
Municipal Presidents Have 4 Demands: What Are They?
In response to the reports, mayors Olegario Viramontes Gómez of Jalpa, Julieta Isamar Camacho García of Huanusco, Carlos Fabián Vera Loera of Tabasco, and Daniel Romo Urrutia of Calvillo submitted a formal request to Zacatecas Governor David Monreal, as well as the state Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the National Guard, and the Secretariat of National Defense.
“We are aware of the situation that has been occurring in the community of La Higuera, Huanusco, on this stretch of highway connecting Jalpa with the municipality of Calvillo. And I would like to mention that we are in constant communication with our Public Security Department,” said Olegario Viramontes.
The municipal presidents established four central demands. The first calls for an assessment of the risks along the road and its inclusion in the State Peacebuilding Roundtable. The second calls for state and federal forces to coordinate patrols and preventive operations along the highway.
In addition, a regional surveillance strategy was proposed focused on the Jalpa-Huanusco-Calvillo corridor, designed based on the times and locations with the highest incidence of crime.
The mayors explained that the position is a preventive measure intended to guarantee the safety of travelers along the borders between the two states.
“Under no circumstances are we going to distance ourselves, and of course we will support, I repeat, to the extent that we can,” the mayor assured.
What Was the State Government’s Response?
After receiving the official letter, the state administration responded by urging the mayors to join the public security collaboration agreements with the state, stating that the municipalities had not finalized the agreements by their own decision.
Likewise, through an official document, state authorities asked the municipal presidents to address the shortage of police officers in their local departments.
