The Pro Regional Economic Development project of Mexico seeks to present programs in Durango that could be a response to the drought, says Atzayaelh Torres.
A report from BBVA and Conagua reported last week that Mexico faces the worst water crisis in the last three years, since 65 percent of the territory suffers some degree of drought, and the situation will not improve.
In this context, the grain-producing region in the central valleys and the municipality of El Mezquital, in the state of Durango, could be one of the largest examples of Climate Action worldwide in terms of water supply as a human right. and the optimization of water use with the introduction of intensive regenerative agriculture, as well as on-site generation of renewable energies, among other topics.
Just take a look at the project being promoted by Pro Desarrollo Economico Regional de México (PRODERM), an organization that promotes Sustainable Development led by Ruben González Villarreal and a group of businessmen at the national level, who seek to present the Guadalupe Victoria Regional Program , a Comprehensive Productive Transformation Program (PTP) for the creation of value within the state of Durango, as well as the initiative of a New Conagua Scheme, to the candidates for the Presidency of Mexico, with the invitation to an Open Forum.
This project is completely aligned with the visions of the nation developed by the teams of Claudia Sheinbaum, Xóchitl Gálvez and Jorge Alvares Máynez, who are competing for the Presidency of Mexico. It contemplates the initial construction of 05 dams with a capacity of 2,766 million cubic meters of water, hydroelectric plants, pumping plants, aqueducts, water distribution tanks and distribution networks for irrigation, by drip, in three agricultural cycles, 314 thousand hectares that will benefit 08 municipalities.
Regarding the energy supply, there would be no problem, since the project would be self-sustainable, since it would generate up to 800 megawatts (MW) with an energy transition program via a hybrid system of renewable energy generation such as hydroelectric, solar and wind, in a scheme of isolated supply.
This entire water strategy of a high technical level promoted with the Vision 2050 Water Program of the State of Durango, which manages 6,552 million initial cubic meters as 50 percent of the water availability of the western Sierra Madre in the entity, benefits the national production of grains (such as beans, corn, which greatly needs to reduce its dependence on the outside (as expressed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador), as well as perennial walnut-avocado products; not to mention, that in this way The feared unavailability of water for agroindustrial projects that come to the region as part of nearshoring would be combated.
In a context in which the agricultural sector is in the eye of a hurricane due to the drought crisis that the country is going through, since the agricultural sector consumes 70 percent of the water that is distributed, and in which in view of the elections , a Nation Project is built, approaches like that of PRODERM have to be not only listened to, but considered as an essential part of the long-term solutions, of which it has been stated so much that they are necessary in Mexico.
