The Coordination of Civil Protection and Risk Management (CEPCO and GR) issued its preventive alert phase in the event of the possible impact of a tropical storm in Oaxaca that evolves into a hurricane near the state’s beaches (from the port of Salina Cruz, to the strip with Pinotepa Nacional), and could reach the coastal area of Chiapas.

The head of the organization, Manuel Maza Sánchez, said that the hydrometeorological phenomenon is being constantly observed, which in the next few hours and until the weekend depending on the effect of climate change could increase its level of danger.

“We are attentive to its eventual advance, and movement, it could not impact, only border the coasts, or impact, but it will depend on the weather conditions, but the instruction is not to trust us, to start taking forecasts, because it could grow to the level of Otis” said the head of CEPCO and GR Manuel Maza Sánchez.

“We began today with the blue alert phase, and depending on the emergency it could be raised to the yellow, orange and red alert phase,” he explained because an eventual impact of a tropical storm in Oaxaca could generate severe flooding, hillslides and slopes, swells, in addition to strong winds and high waves.
He pointed out that in case of danger, the population at risk will have to be evacuated even with the use of public transportation from possibly affected municipalities and localities.

He announced that in the coastal area the hurricane protocols have already been activated, with the civil protection committees where they will work to prepare 3 to 5 shelters where they can enter the population that can eventually be removed from the risk areas.

He explained that according to the forecast, the tropical storm and hurricane season will begin on May 15 and it is expected that 35 to 41 storms may impact the coasts of Mexico, of which 20 to 23 could hit the Gulf of Mexico and 15 to 18 the coasts of the Pacific Ocean.

Manuel Maza Sánchez, director of the Coordination of Civil Protection and Risk Management (CEPCO and GR), believes that this year’s hurricane season will be beneficial for Oaxaca and can serve to recharge the water table that has been depleted by the drought. prolonged.

However, in case the situation becomes complicated, in which 3 to 4 category 1 and 2 hurricanes and 4 to 5 category 3, 4 and 5 hurricanes may impact the coasts, Oaxaca will emerge as safe as possible.
