Recent information from the OUM reveals that there are 95 museums in the state, and of those, 29 charge admission
According to INEGI data, the total number of visitors to Veracruz museums in 2023 was 631,700, which is considered a significant number of visitors that highlights the importance of these places as centers of education and entertainment.
It also highlights the crucial role in promoting the historical and artistic heritage of Veracruz, says researcher Azminda Román Nieto, member of the University Observatory of Museums (OUM) of the Universidad Veracruzana.
Recent information from the OUM, which aims to create a diagnostic monitoring space for Veracruz museums, reveals that there are 95 museums in the state, and of those, 29 charge admission, in order to raise funds for maintenance and improvement of the exhibitions.
As for those with free admission, it reveals that there are 46 that give the opportunity to enjoy both permanent and temporary exhibitions.
What is the most visited museum and who visits it?
Regarding the public, an interesting fact stands out: in the Anthropology Museum of Xalapa, in the years 2018, 2019 and 2022, visits were made mostly by women, 50 percent more than men.
Although it is not categorized as a museum, the Sculpture Garden also registers a greater number of women, where in addition to the exhibition of pieces and installations outside, it has three galleries dedicated to graphic and visual arts.
The Observatory mentions as an advance the creation of 81 web pages of the same number of museums in the entity, which allows users to access detailed information about the institution, as well as images and announcements of upcoming events.
Another of the OUM’s missions is to monitor and evaluate the MAX’s audiences. In this area, it shares that in 2018, 2019 and 2022, the majority of visitors were national.
The most frequent visitors come from Veracruz, CDMX and Puebla, although foreign visitors were also received from countries such as the United States, Switzerland, Germany and Colombia.
It has detected that interest in the MAX has increased, since the average visit time per person went from 1-2 hours to 1-3 hours.

The Observatory shares that Veracruz currently has 95 museums, 19 of them in Orizaba, nine in the port of Veracruz and seven in Xalapa.
The X-ray indicates 12 community museums, four state museums and 13 federal museums, each reflecting unique aspects of local and national history and culture.
“In addition, the offer includes a mixed museum, 41 municipal museums, 21 private museums, one undefined museum and one university museum, each contributing in a special way to the preservation and dissemination of the cultural heritage of the region.”
In terms of themes, it reveals that 42 museums dedicated to history, 24 museums dedicated to archaeology, four museums dedicated to industry and four museums dedicated to art stand out.
