Despite the fact that in previous years they did not have a significant movement of exports and imports of vehicles, ports such as Tuxpan, Mazatlán and Altamira have taken advantage of the automotive “boom” driven by the arrival of Asian brands. Proof of this is that while the port of Tuxpan registered an increase in the import and export of vehicles, on the contrary, the port of Veracruz registered a fall in the first months of 2024.
According to official data from the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine (CGPMM), of the Secretariat of the Navy, during the first quarter of the year 557,696 automobiles were transported through the national ports, that is, an annual growth of 11 percent. Of that total, the port of Tuxpan was the one that registered the highest annual growth, of 1,209.7 percent, by mobilizing 22,199 units.
The port of Mazatlán followed with an increase of 230 percent and 51,367 vehicles, and Altamira, with an increase of 80 percent and 51,367 automobiles. In contrast, the ports of Lázaro Cárdenas and Veracruz, which the automakers traditionally relied on for their activities, reported double-digit declines due to saturation problems with the arrival of various Asian brands. For example, the port of Veracruz added 186,885 automobiles from January to March of this year, that is, an annual decrease of 18.1 percent. In turn, Lázaro Cárdenas received 159,780 units, which translated into an annual reduction of 11.6 percent. That’s how things are.
